Crossing International Borders - Crossing Communication Barriers
The College of Public Speaking through its professional work and philanthropic programmes endeavours to improve the world (in the best way it can). Communication is at the heart of what we do and where there is an opportunity to improve international understanding - that is where you'll find us.
Our annual business speaking contest the Corporate Challenge pulls in a huge audience each year. But that's just in London. There are so many aspiring speakers from around the world who would appreciate an international voice.
Therefore, the College of Public Speaking is introducing the WOSC.

The subject for all speeches is 'If...'.
Pre-speech
Directly to the camera, please announce your first name, your surname, your profession/studies and where you live or were born. So for example, 'Hello, my name is Sandrine Dupont, I am a medical student and I live in Lyon, France.' Or 'Hello, my name is Mohammed Nasser, I am a teacher and I live in Jeddah.'
Speech Timing
The judges are looking for a speech of a minimum of three minutes and a maximum of five minutes. The timing begins on the first word following the salutation, 'My friends...'
Judging Criteria
Speeches should not be read and speakers should be creative and imaginative while utilising the AV medium.
This is the digital universe and for the young, communication at the speed of light is vital. Hence the WOSC. While we commend the application of video recording as a vehicle for oral communication we should attempt to employ the medium to its best advantage. Minimising background noise, using cue cards, careful positioning of the lectern and the speaker in relation to the background are all important ingredients in a successful production.
Recordings must not be edited (i.e. no cutting and pasting and no fade-ins or fade-outs).
The judges' decision is final and the College of Public Speaking will not enter into any discussion regarding the result. Nobody from the College of Public Speaking will be involved in the decision making process.
Judges 2012
An international judging panel is being assembled and their details will be posted shortly. They are independent of the College and will determine the overall and regional winners. Their decision is final and the College of Public Speaking will not enter into any discussion regarding the result
