The fight or flight response

Posted by vince
Published on 26 March 2023

The "fight or flight" or stress response is an automatic physiological reaction that prepares our body to respond to perceived danger or threat. It is a survival mechanism that has evolved to help humans and animals react quickly in potentially life-threatening situations.

When the brain perceives a threat, the hypothalamus, a small region at the base of the brain, sends signals to the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the release of adrenaline and other stress hormones, such as cortisol. These hormones cause a series of changes in the body, including:

Increased heart rate and blood pressure: Adrenaline causes the heart to beat faster and harder, increasing blood flow to the muscles and vital organs.

Dilated pupils: The pupils of the eyes widen to allow more light to enter, improving vision in low-light conditions.

Rapid breathing: Breathing becomes faster and more shallow to supply oxygen to the muscles.

Increased blood sugar: Adrenaline triggers the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream, providing extra muscle energy.

Decreased digestion: The digestive system slows down as the body diverts resources from non-essential functions to focus on survival.

These changes prepare the body to either fight the threat or flee from it. The fight or flight response is usually short-lived and dissipates once the perceived danger has passed. However, suppose the stress response is triggered too often or for prolonged periods. In that case, it can adversely affect health, such as chronic anxiety and increased risk of heart disease, depression, and other health issues.
